Love the classic muddy buddy recipe? Make this twist on the recipe by turning them into rice crispy treat bars! You can also use the classic Chex cereal to make them more like like traditional muddy buddies in bar-form. Even if you call it puppy chow, instead – this dessert will be a favorite.

Muddy buddies (a.k.a. puppy chow) were a sleepover staple growing up. There’s something so nostalgic about getting your hands messy with the powdered sugar as you eat a big bowl of this chocolatey dessert.
When you make them into rice crispy bars though, they aren’t quite as messy! Easier to portion control too (maybe)!

This recipe uses vegan friendly marshmallows (a.k.a. gelatin-free) and rice crispy cereal. If you want to make these even more like the traditional muddy buddy treat, use the Chex cereal in place (I always preferred the rice Chex cereal anyway!)
You can always dust the top with powdered sugar but for the fully covered look you’ll want to toss the finished bars in a bag of powdered sugar. This is how I always did it with muddy buddys – and of course ate them straight out of the bag.

Muddy Buddy Rice Crispy Treats

Love the classic muddy buddy recipe? Make this twist on the recipe by turning them into rice crispy bars! You can also use the classic Chex cereal to make them more like like traditional muddy buddies in bar-form. Even if you call it puppy chow, instead - this dessert will be a favorite.
Ingredients
- ½ cup salted butter
- 4 cups mini marshmallows (I use Dandies, which are vegan)
- 1 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1 ¼ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 6 cups rice crispy cereal (or crushed Rice Chex cereal, for a more muddy buddy feel!)
- ¾ cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- Melt your butter in a large pot over medium heat.
- Once the butter is completely melted, add the marshmallows. Stir the marshmallow constantly until they are all melted and the mixture is smooth.
- Stir in the peanut butter and chocolate chips until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
- Fold in your rice cereal and ensure that it is evenly covered in melted marshmallows and chocolate.
- Spread the mixture into a 9x13 inch baking pan and let the bars chill in the fridge for an hour.
- Slice your bars and then either dust with powdered sugar, or add them to a gallon-sized ziplock bag with your powdered sugar and shake the bag to fully cover the bars. Enjoy!
